Alongside the publication of our new Climate Change and Environment Guidance and the appointment of our Environmental Officer, we want to celebrate the work of our community across Wales and the Borders in addressing climate change, sustainability and environmental issues and encourage further progress.

The winners receive free WFRA membership for the next year and money towards further improving or encouraging their climate and sustainability actions.
Race organiser nominations will be judged against three criteria:
Tell us what they did and why.
Tell us what difference their actions have made e.g., have they addressed aspects of their race that had the biggest environmental or climate change impacts? Are they planning to continue doing this and/or build on this further?
Tell us how they have engaged with others about their actions. Have they communicated their actions to people attending the race? Have they collaborated with others to make changes?
Individual nominations will be judged against the four pillars from The Green Runners. Don’t worry if you have more to say for one of these pillars than another – the nomination will be judged in the round for all the pillars:
Tell us how they travelled to their fell running activities. Why have they done this?
Tell us about the kit (i.e. clothing, shoes, accessories) that they use in their fell running activities. Why have they chosen these? Have they changed the way they purchase their kit?
Tell us about their sports nutrition and diet. How do their food choices when fell running impact the environment (e.g. plastic packaging)? What environmental considerations do they make in their everyday diet?
Tell us how they have engaged with others. Have they inspired others or worked collaboratively to create change? Have they shared their actions?
The two winners will each receive an environmentally related prize.
There will be a panel of four judges, who will assess each entry against the criteria above:
Briony is the WFRA Environmental Officer and a member of Mynyddwyr de Cymru (MDC). She is also a researcher, specialising in public engagement with climate change.
Craig is the Chair of the WFRA and has been fell running for 20 years. He has a keen interest in trees and ecology, has grown and manages his own woodland, and also hosts a nest box study.
Ruth Pickvance is a former British Champion fell runner. She puts environmental issues at the forefront of the work she does as Director for Element-Active.
Patrick is a lifetime member of the FRA and an experienced fell and ultra runner, with Dragons Back, BGR, OMM and South West Coast Path completions. He is Professor of Geography at the University of Exeter, one of the world’s most highly cited social scientific researchers and Director of the ACCESS network.
We want to know who inspires you and which of your peers you think are doing great work in this area, therefore you cannot nominate yourself – we would like you to nominate others. Nominations can be submitted in Welsh or English.
Ensure the person you are nominating meets the eligibility criteria below. We also recommend reading our Climate Change and Environment Guidance to see examples of the types of climate and environmental actions that can be taken within the fell running community.
