New Committee volunteers supporting the fell running community

The volunteer Committee of the Welsh Fell Runners Association (WFRA) has three new people supporting fell running and racing in Wales and the Borders: Jules Mathias, Briony Latter and Carwyn Phillips. Their positions were approved at the WFRA Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 30th November 2025.

Jules Mathias takes on the role of Chair. Jules runs for Mynydd Du in south Wales and was previously their Chair and interim Secretary, and has experience as a Non-Executive Director. Read about Jules’ journey into fell running.

As a Committee, we want to celebrate everything that makes our sport and community special, while also bringing in fresh ideas. Fell running is more than racing – it’s the friendships, the pride we take in our hills, and the shared adventures that keep us coming back. So I’m honoured and energised to step into the role of Chair for the Welsh Fell Runners Association.

Fell running in Wales and the Borders is built on tradition, determination, and community – from the rocky ridges of Eryri, to the rugged Preselis, to the rolling hills of the Black Mountains. Our sport is full of adventure, no matter how long you’ve been running. Every race has its own story: grit, laughter, and that brilliant feeling of crossing the finish line.

Looking ahead, we’re keen to keep pushing things forward together: helping new runners discover the joy of the mountains safely, exploring bold new routes, and making our events even more inclusive and welcoming. Together we can make sure Welsh fell running continues to thrive, spark adventures, and stay strong for
generations to come.

We’re looking forward to seeing many of you out on the hills, at races, or when you get in touch with ideas. Let’s keep the spirit of Welsh fell running alive – united and true to the mountains we love.

Diolch and see you on the hills!"

Carwyn Phillips steps into the role of Race Registration and Safety Officer after being an Individual Member on the Committee since 2013. He runs for Rhedwyr Preseli in Pembrokeshire and is the Race Organiser for the Preseli Beast as well as several other races. Read about Carwyn’s journey into fell running.

I'm well aware of how committed Race Organisers are, and how much time and effort it is in putting on races far and wide. I'd like to think that I'm here to help Race Organisers with anything if I can. So if you have any questions no matter how big or small, then please don't hesitate to contact me.”

In addition to her role as Environmental Officer since 2022, Briony Latter takes on the role of Secretary after the position was vacant for a year. Briony runs for Mynyddwyr de Cymru in south Wales and is a climate change researcher with a background in communications and the creative industry. Read about Briony’s journey into fell
running.

Fell running in Wales and the Borders is such a friendly, exciting and special community that I’m proud to be part of. I’m keen to ensure the WFRA supports this and am looking forward to meeting and hearing from lots of you.”

The aim of the WFRA is to encourage and support grassroots fell running and racing in Wales and the Borders. It is managed by a small group of volunteers who are passionate about fell running and want to contribute to our community. The Committee members are all from different backgrounds with a wealth of different professional and personal experiences. Read the stories of our Committee members and learn about their roles here.

The WFRA reflects our community so we encourage people to get in touch with us to share ideas, thoughts, issues and things to celebrate. For example, the Environment Awards 2025 are currently open where you can nominate Race Organisers or Individuals for their contributions to making their fell races or fell running activities
more sustainable (closes 9th January 2026).
