Results from our race Series so far in 2026
With the South Wales Series 2026 recently coming to a close with the Cat’s Back fell race | Ras Crib y Garth, we look back on the fell race Series in Wales and the Borders which have taken place so far this year.

South Wales Series
The South Wales Series 2026 took place from March to October. After seven races, the Series winners are:
OVERALL Male/Open (M/O)
- 1st Rhys Goodrick (Vegan Runners)
- 2nd Wyndham Turner (Mynydd Du)
- 3rd Tony James (Unattached)
OVERALL Female (F)
- 1st Rhian Probert also 1st FV50 (Mynydd Du)
- 2nd Emma McWilliams also 1st FV40 (Mynydd Du)
- 3rd Alix Arndt also 2nd FV40 (Sarn Helen)

There were no M/O or FU23 runners eligible for an award, although quite a few had run a couple of races. The V60 category was perhaps the most fiercely fought. Despite quite a few members in older age categories having run in one or two races, only two were eligible for prizes.
Prizes were organised by Ellie Salisbury (WFRA Series/Championships Coordinator) with assistance from Committee member John Mainwaring. The two perpetual trophies were made especially by local fell runner and Race Organiser Andy Creber, and the engraved wooden chopping boards, bottle openers, and slate medals/coasters were made by Raven Eve Designs in Penmaenmawr, north Wales. Winners were also awarded engraved titanium whistles.

A huge amount of work goes into organising this (and other) Series, as Ellie explains:
Series don't happen by themselves – they actually involve a lot of work by a core of people, so it's great when they are well supported as this one has been, with 275 runners taking part. As your Championships/Series Coordinator, I select four short, three medium and one long race for both the North and South Wales Series, and I aim to choose races with which I am familiar, and which have interesting routes/reliable Race Organisers/preferably a headquarters but definitely available toilets/sufficient parking and which are spread out both geographically and throughout the year, without involving any clashes with other popular races or with each other - that's lots of tick boxes, so it's not an easy job!
Each Race Organiser in our Series of seven races has worked hard to provide you with a safe but challenging race, and has communicated with me about all their race details and info on a regular basis, so that makes my job a lot easier.
Behind the scenes, we have our Statistician, Matt O'Keefe, ably helped by our Calendar Secretary, Linda Edmondson, updating the standings on our website on a regular basis and liaising with Fabian4 Online Entry Service's Adrian Moir who works hard in the background checking membership eligibility and producing the results for many of the individual races, and our Chair and Secretary, Julia Mathias and Briony Latter, both very busy helping here and there, are always at the final race to present the awards and to take photos. So big thanks are due to the whole team.

North Wales Mid Week Series
The North Wales Mid Week Series, also known as the Tuesday Evening Series, consisted of 12 midweek races in north Wales between April and June.
The series was originally founded by former Eryri Harrier members Alun Tudur Williams (Wills) and Henry Stansfield in 1991. Under the coordination of Mike Blake and helpers for the last 20+ years, it has grown in strength and popularity, such that the 2026 races regularly saw 150-200 runners.
The Series winners are:
OVERALL Male/Open (M/O)
- 1st Gavin Roberts (Calder Valley Fell Runners)
- 2nd Rhys Jones (Rhedwyr Hebog)
- 3rd Math Roberts (Eryri Orienteers)
OVERALL Female (F)
- 1st Miranda Grant-Roberts (Rhedwyr Eryri Harriers)
- 2nd Bethan Billington (Rhedwyr Eryri Harriers)
- 3rd Claire Donnelly (Rhedwyr Eryri Harriers)
In parallel, there is also now a very successful Junior Series coordinated by Jordan Collins, whose races see 40+ youngsters (U8s-U16s) flying around their courses with smiles on their faces.
Despite the modest race entry fee and because of the generous sponsorship by Joe Browns, more than £2,000 worth of prizes and trophies are awarded to 53 category winners, as well as those runners who ran every race but didn’t win a prize, and to those of who organised the races.

There are more races to come! The final race for the North Wales Series and the South Wales Junior Fell Running Series are both coming up in early November, and the South Wales Winter Hill Series recently started. There will also be a brand new South Wales Mid Week Series in 2027, based on the very successful North Wales Mid Week Series. More details to follow – watch this space! Don’t forget that fell running happens year round – there are many other fell races taking place throughout autumn and winter outside of the Series. |
